Death Valley (The Spirit World)

Being that it is apparently #InternationalMountainMonday I thought I’d share one of my absolute favorite mountains. Unlike my usual fashion I’m not going to share a meaningful anecdote about my time in #elchaltén. Instead I just want you to drink in her majesty. #mtfitzroy #fitzroy #lifenomadic
As of today this flesh suit has made 44 laps around the sun. 44! Thats so wild to me as there was a time that I didn’t think I’d make it past 30; yet I feel as if I have lived at least half of that in different lives. From being an athlete and student to serving in the military, a bartender, business owner, tattoo artist, builder, traveler, youtuber, student (again) and plenty more. I’ve done so many things and I have so much more to do. Today I am looking back at all the mistakes and triumphs, all of the paths not taken and the trails blazed, the broken bits and the strengths, friends gained and lost, the pitfalls and the mountain tops and I’m so proud of the man I have become. Now, this is by no means some sort of flex. It’s a way of appreciating the life I have, the sacrifices I’ve made and the work I still have to do. I think we sometimes forget that. We forget that it’s hard to want more out of life. I know that I am my worst critic and that sometimes I hold myself to unattainable standards but I’m working on it everyday. At times I’m so busy beating myself up for failing or not meeting a standard I’ve set, that I forget to celebrate the wins no matter how big or small. I’m not some social media influencer that types out these dramatic and emotive axioms, yet is a complete dumpster fire in real life. What you see is what you get. I only want to make my life better and to help other do the same. And for me, one way to do that is share my life experiences so that maybe someone else will get something out of it. Why else would I want to do all these things if I didn’t share them? I can’t take them with me when it’s my time to punch the time clock.
This election isn’t about red or blue, right or left, or even liberal and conservative values. It’s about the soul of this nation. It’s about preventing the erosion of our democracy. It’s about decency. I’m not voting on behalf of myself. Because let’s be honest here; being a cis, white, male during this garbage fire of an administration hasn’t necessarily affected me all that adversely, apart from the complete imbecilic fumbling of this current pandemic. I’m voting for EVERY SINGLE one of my BIPOC friends, LBGTQ friends, my socioeconomically challenged friends, the National Parks and of course all of the women in my life. I will always put them first.
For me going outside isn’t just about adventure, fresh air, being in touch with nature or even the outdoors itself. Even though those are all obviously salient, being able to sit alone with my thoughts has been one of the biggest challenges and greatest achievements of my life. We’ve been conditioned - for some people since they were super young - to constantly distract ourselves. I’m fortunate to have lived before smart phones, the internet and social media so I know there is life outside all of that. Now I’m not suggesting a nefarious conspiracy of lizard people distributing mind control through electronic devices, but being that we are inundated with an onslaught of stimuli, we have the hardest time sitting still, being quiet, not doing. We think it’s boredom but in reality it’s well, just life. Going on solo backpacking trips affords me the opportunity to not just disconnect from all of that but to connect with this mass of tissue we call a body I have been injected into. I get to feel pain and exhaustion. I get to feel frustration and elation. I get to feel the wind, the sun and smell the trees and my own body odor. I get to feel fear and accomplishment. I get to feel what it’s truly like to be alive. I refuse to look back on my life and not remember. To let time pass me by and have no recollection of it because I was completely distracted by meaningless diversions and delusions. To wake up, eat, go to work, watch tv, scroll the internet, go to bed, rinse and repeat. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with that, however for me, that sounds like death. Worse than death, a waste of life. I’m here to experience life. I’m here to - as my buddy @ihviiimattvincent would say - “kick today in the dick”. I’m trying to put life in a headlock and give it a noogie, to collect experiences, not debt and I will continue to do so until my lungs collapse. We may not be in control of life, but we are in control of how we react to it so no matter what the experience is “good” or “bad”, I’m here for it. #bringit #GoTheFuckOutside #selfcaretip #ithinkthereforeiam
Literally two of my favorite humans. They have a thirst for adventure only matched by their love of life and of each other. I have meet tons of people whilst navigating this weird life yet few have stuck out like these two. They inspire me like no other. Thanks @independentian and @visvivacious for always being down. Love you both! Here’s to all of the adventures!!! #lifenomadic #adventureisoutthere
Resistance builds strength and adversity builds character. We live in a world that isn’t that comfortable. At least not presently. A lot of things we took for granted aren’t available and we aren’t as “free” to move about as we would like. In reality, we really only have two choices; we can bitch and moan about it, or we can rise to the challenge and make it work. Honestly, I prefer the latter over the former. I have learned in the last few years or so, that there are many things we cannot control and instead of wasting time and energy either being bummed, or being resistant, we can choose to use those opportunities to create, to challenge and to grow. These are the building blocks of life. I have made it my mission to come out of this tumultuous time a better human than I was before. This isn’t meant to shame anyone struggling, as I know many of us are; this is just me on my journey, on my terms; mask on, head up and ready for whatever the world throws at me. #bringit #fitspo #lifecoach #reps4recovery #crossfitambrose #lifenomadic
